Apart from his brilliant work as a director, Steven Spielberg is usually known to be a nice guy, generally considered as warm, welcoming, and professional. However, this might not always be true. Here’s what one of his acquaintances has said about the man.

Is Steven Spielberg a ruthless Hollywood mogul?

Sam Neillworked withSteven Spielbergon the 1993 film,Jurassic Park.Last year, the actor dropped his memoir,Did I Ever Tell You This?where he talked about one of the best filmmakers of all time.

In the book, Neill, who played the role of paleontologist Dr Alan Grant in the film, revealed that he wanted to find out what made Spielberg tick (viaThe Independent).

“It’s shameless. I can tell you that now”: Jurassic Park Is the Only Real Sequel to ‘Jaws’ and Steven Spielberg Isn’t Embarrassed to Admit That

BeforeJurassic Parkcommenced filming, Neill asked one of Spielberg’s associates“for some insight”on him. Describing the director in a very unique phrase, they replied, “You have to understand [Spielberg] is part wonder-filled child and part ruthless Hollywood mogul.”

The thing about being a visionary filmmaker is that Spielberg knows what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants to get things done. Now, this can make things a bit difficult for his crew.

A technician recalled,

You’d run from one set-up to the next because he has got it all worked out how he wants to do it.

Well, you cannot get to where he is without giving your work your all and then some. But did Spielberg take things a tad bit too far? His biographer, Joe McBride, wrote that the director could closely relate to the protagonist ofJurassic Park,John Hammond.

He stated that Spielberg often shared John’s“dark side”when it comes to having“an all-encompassing passion for his work, sometimes at the expense of family responsibilities”.McBride also added that Spielberg was so much like the fictional founder of InGen that he had a tough time separating himself from the character.

Steven Spielberg once admitted to being tough on his crew

In a 2017 interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg admitted that he would often be very tough on his crew on the set of his films. Now, this behaviour was limited to be towards the crew whereas the cast members got to see a more loving and much calmer side of the filmmaker.

However, it all changed with producerKathleen Kennedysat him down and gave him a piece of her mind.

Kennedy first started off her professional relationship with Spielberg as his assistant. One day while shootingE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Kennedy gave him an earful on how he was mistreating the crew. Spielberg recalled,

Basically, I was a little bit of a hothead, impatient, and I would be hard on my crew — loving to my cast but tough on my crew. And about 15 days into shooting E.T., she pulled me into her office and sat me down in a chair and gave me the bollocking of my life. Because she did not like the way I was talking to the crew. She didn’t care for my impatience, she didn’t care for my sharpness. She said, “This is unacceptable behavior,” and I hadn’t heard that since a teacher in school or my own mom — and that was a big shift in my life.

He then admitted that this“bollocking”made him more“mindful”going forward since a person he respected and trusted actually had the guts to call him out on his wrongful behavior. Well, we all need a Kennedy in our lives!

Jurassic Parkis available to watch on Max.
