Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is a trainwreck of a franchise, essentially built to capitalize upon the popularity of the titular Marvel Comics superhero. However, despite several films under its belt, the franchise has yet to properly introduce its own version of Spider-Man despite several hints and nods.

On Reddit, one user tried to determine the identity of SSMU’s Spider-Man, especially since fans have debated whether one of three existing live-action iterations of the character could be the answer. In the process, the fan theory provided a pretty conclusive answer to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man being ditched by the SSMU, and here is why.

New Fan Theory Debates Who Is SSMU’s Spider-Man

Spider-Manis arguably one of the most popular and recognizable superheroes in cinema. As a result, Sony’s choice to build a shared cinematic universe around Spider-Man’s supporting characters, without the web-crawler in the picture was always odd.

The SSMU has largely struggled with fans and critics, because of its evident lack of Spider-Man.Morbiusmade references to the character in a deleted scene, whileMadame Webshowed the birth of Peter Parker.

However, the post-credits scene ofVenom 2, is the only time Spider-Man appears in the franchise, albeit the alternate reality version ofTom Holland. On Reddit, user@FastestManDeadcame up with a detailed theory that attempted to deduce the identity of the SSMU’s Spider-Man.

“You’re going to have to deal with it”: Even a $10,000,000 Paycheck Couldn’t Convince Tom Holland to Do One Thing in Spider-Man: No Way Home

The user collected all the information available about the SSMU’s Spider-Man, including being born around 2003, getting powers from a spider, and building his own webshooters. Hence, it is evident that the SSMU’s Spider-Man could not be Andrew Garfield’s or Tobey Maguire’s version because they are much older.

SSMU Fan Theory Suggests the Franchise is Ditching Tom Holland’s Spider-Man

The user provided compelling arguments as to why the SSMU Spider-Man is an entirely different version compared to the previous live-action versions. However, the character has most in common with Holland’s version from the MCU.

The user pointed out that the SSMU’s Spider-Man was revealed to be framed for a murder he did not commit. At the same time, he was reported to have gone AWOL in Europe in 2019, which is reminiscent of plot points from 2019’sSpider-Man: Far From Home, although the film is set in 2024.

“Wild, unexpected character will appear”: Nicolas Cage’s ‘Spider-Man Noir’ Set to Be the SpiderVerse Equivalent to Tom Holland’s ‘No Way Home’

Nonetheless, the similarities and the post-credits cameo inVenom 2strongly indicate that Sony, at least initially, planned to use Holland’s version of Spider-Man for their shared universe. However, with the birth of Peter Parker being depicted inMadame Weband other inconsistencies it is safe to say that the franchise is moving away from Holland for the good.
