In addition to the critique of the writing of the show, the casting choice was also questioned by fans. One actress who bore the brunt of unimpressed fans was Elizabeth Yu who portrayed the sinister character of Azula. Many were not happy with the character’s portrayal but some fans defended the show’s vision. The layout of Azula’s character in season one might prove to be beneficial for her development in later seasons.

The transformative villain: Azula’s character build-up

Netflix came out with anAvatar: The Last Airbenderlive-action series, created byAlbert Kim. The adventure-fantasy show brought the animated series’ beloved characters onscreen. However, as it happens with most adaptations fan’s reactions were mixed.

Some didn’t agree with various aspects of the show while others found it to be intriguing. One common complaint everyone had was with the series’ writing and peculiar casting choices. Most fans didn’t agree with Elizabeth Yu’s portrayal of the iconic character of Azula.

One fan, however, pointed out something which others might have missed. The show’s characterization of Azula is very different from the source material. The actress portrayed a more tamed version of the evil mastermind which might later escalate into her true form.

Azula in the show did not match the description of her animated version who was much more sinister and cruel. But this could be Netflix’s initial plan in order to provide for a build-up for the character. It is possible that in the second season fans might see her portrayed in a more malevolent light.

The show versus the animated series: Azula

Most reviews mentioned their disappointment with the casting of Azula’s character in the show. Yu’s innocent appearance and youthful visage did not exactly scream evil, but that might be on purpose. The show might be trying to engage the audience’s sympathy for the character before revealing her true arc.

Most probably the second season would showcase the malicious Firebender in her transformed avatar. The decision to make her character more emotional as compared to her animated version, might help in evoking the viewer’s sentiments.

All adaptations come with their interpretation of the source material, and that includes a slight tweaking of the characters. While the OG fans might be shocked or confused with the actress’s portrayal of the morally grey character, this might be a build-up for the second season.
