The originalDark Soulsis known for a lot of things: it introduced us to Miyazaki’s dystopian world, grueling combat, and of course the “You Died” screen which has been burned into the memories of anyone who’s ever played the game. It’s also known for its flaws, which fans of the series (myself included) notice more now that the trilogy has ended. Thankfully,Dark Souls: Daughters of Ashis here to spice things up and show us a whole new side of the grueling game.

Daughters of Ashis a mod made by Scott Mooney. If that name doesn’t sound familiar it’s because it isn’t. Mooney, or Grumrukh as he goes by on Reddit, is just a fan of the series who sought out to create this enormous reconfiguration of the game that came out in 2011.

The mod is currently available for free onNexusModsand adds new bosses, enemies, items, weapons, and rearranges NPCs and bonfires to make for a wholly new experience forDark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. The projecttook a little over 1000 hours to complete and Mooney has said that the mod will be coming toDark Souls: Remasteredat some point in 2019. He’s taking donations on PayPal if you’re interested in supporting him.

Famous Twitch stream LobosJR started streaming the mod recently to big audiences. You can check out a VOD of that below.

While the originalDark Soulshas seen a resurgence due to therelease of the remastered edition of the gameon PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch,Dark Souls: Daughters of Ashhas seen an even bigger pilgrimage.

There’s been a 50 percent increase in the active player count and a 1000 percent increase in Twitch viewership, according to Mooney.

The mod does make the game a bit more challenging, and by rearranging the position of NPCs and items players won’t be able to speed run the game as they had previously. There’s no new voice acting or dialogue, but the project has been a huge success regardless.
