There’s no doubt that CD Projekt RED (CDPR) has used the learning it obtained from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and will apply it to The Witcher 4. However, it seems the devs even used the previous entry in the franchise after its current-gen patch was pushed out.
Over on Twitter/X, Philipp Weber, the Narrative Director of The Witcher 4 (and the Quest Designer of The Witcher 3), shared that they worked on a new quest for The Witcher 3 in preparation for The Witcher 4.

According toWeber, “2 years ago we released a new quest for The Witcher 3. New designers and writers worked on it preparing for the Witcher 4, together with one of our most senior quest designers, who is with us since the Witcher 1. All in all, it was the perfect start to getting back into the vibe.”
The quest Weber was referring to was part of the PS5, Xbox Series X|S patch for The Witcher 3that was released in December 2022. The update included a new side quest, “In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow,” and completing it rewarded players with items inspired by Netflix’s The Witcher series.

While CD Projekt RED has already mentioned that,regarding map size and density, The Witcher 4 will be similar to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the most glaring difference is for the fourth entry, it’ll feature Ciri as the protagonist and not Geralt.
This might surprise franchise fans who have grown accustomed to Geralt headlining CDPR’s The Witcher games. If you’re wondering why CD Projekt shifted protagonists,the developers explained it, and it’s not because of some agenda or anything.

Geralt will still show up in some capacity in The Witcher 4, though the studiodid reveal he’ll be 61 years old in the upcoming game, so that’s another good reason to change protagonists to someone more spritely.
