WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Modern Warfare 2 and 3.
Yesterday,Activisionpulled back the curtain onCall of Duty’s massive Season 4 update. The new season is set to kick off on May 29 and is absolutely chocked full of content for Multiplayer, Zombies, andWarzone.

As usual, the new season isn’t just about new weapons, maps, perks, and modes, there’s also an abundance of new cosmetic items for players to get their hands on, whether that be through the in-game store or the Season 4 Battle Pass. However, one of the new Battle Pass operators for Season 4 is John “Soap” MacTavish…you know, that guy that died in the Modern Warfare 3 campaign?
Call Of Duty’s Inclusion With Game Pass Will Reportedly Bring Changes To The Service
Game Pass will be altered, according to an insider.
For those who might be unaware, Soap was murdered by Makarov in Modern Warfare 3’s closing mission. Makarov, who is just seconds away from killing Captain Price, is stopped in his tracks by Soap. The two have a short fight before Makarov, ultimately, gets the better of Soap and shoots him dead.
Call of Duty’s campaign story is usually continued, to a degree, through new cutscenes at the beginning of each season. Now, with Season 4 on the horizon, fans can’t quite seem to work out how Soap is returning as a playable operator.

“Once again, Call of Duty resurrect an objectively dead character purely so they can sell skins for him,” X userHiddenXperia said. “Soap was literally shot in the head in MWIII’s (awful) Campaign, now he’s magically alive.”
Other users, such as TheGamingRevolution, called Call of Duty’s story “pointless” if Soap’s return is canon, noting that there would “zero reason” to care for the characters emotionally if they can simply be resurrected at a later date.

Some users are defending Activision’s decision to return Soap, stating that the new cutscene for Season 4 likely won’t be canon. This would, essentially, mean that none of the new season’s cutscenes are canon to the Modern Warfare 3 story, but Activision has never really explained whether or not that’s the case.
It’s also not the first time that Call of Duty has brought back characters that were previously believed to be deceased. In Season 5 of Modern Warfare 2, Phillip Graves, whom fans saw die after his tank exploded to smithereens, made a questionable return as he apparently just wasn’t in the tank.

So who knows whether or not Soap’s return is really canon. Apparently, even a bullet to the brain can’t keep a good man down.
