2017’sWar for the Planet of the Apesbrought about a resounding change in the franchise’s universe and appeared to mark an end to the saga. However, the 2022 Wes Ball directorial,Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has expanded the lore further ahead by as much as three centuries after the end of its previous installment, and with a new working order that has apes as the dominant species on the planet and humans reduced to a feral state.

At a time when the flick is surging ahead at the global box office with the likes of Freya Allan spearheading its cast, it also has not forgotten its roots. Eagle-eyed fans have spotted numerous connections between the current movie’s central characters and Caesar, the ape from the first 2011 movie who kick-started the lore in the first place. The easter eggs may now hint at the future of the franchise itself.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apesteases Caesar references
The events of the latest movie,Kingdom of the Planet of the Apestake place hundreds of years after the end of Caesar’s reign over the apes with Proximus Caesar, played by Kevin Durand, taking over as the new king. However,Owen Teague’s ape character, Noa, plays a rather central role in the movie and it is he who bears more resemblance to the originalAndy Serkis’ character than the new ruler, hinting at the latter’s fate.
In a Reddit thread, an avid fan pointed out genetic traits such as how Noa and Caesar share the same hazel-green color of the iris as well as a white human-like sclera, the region surrounding the iris. Meanwhile, Proximus features a dark sclera, likely hinting that Noa is the true descendant of the leader of the Simian uprising.

In addition to the eye similarity, both feature a bald patch and a scar of sorts below their right shoulder and chest. Finally, both characters showcase hyperpigmentation on the face. All of these point to the fact that Noa has more to his story than just being a sympathetic character.
Freya Allan carries subtle easter eggs of her own
Kingdom of the Planet of the ApesfeaturedFreya Allanas Mae, a feral human who displayed high intellect and wit. In the course of the events of the movie, she is rechristened as Nova by the apes. However, the name bears a ton of easter eggsgoing back all the way to the very first 1968Planet of the Apesmovie as well as the subsequent two reboot trilogies.
Furthermore, her given name also serves as a meta-joke, referencing how a person of the same name was responsible for the spread of the advanced Simian flu and the eventual collapse of humanity in the last movie.
