Borderlands 4is perhaps the most anticipated release of the beloved looter-shooter franchise. With Gearbox touting it as the developer’s most ambitious game to date with"billions of guns and accessories,“it’s no surprise that they’ll pull out all the stops to fulfill that promise.
Customization has always been a helpful feature in personalizing the player experience, andBorderlands 4is all about creating a power fantasy that allows players to wreak havoc and splatter guts and bullets on the canvas that is the planet of Kairos.

We were lucky to attend a hands-on preview event to playtestBorderlands 4at the 2K headquarters in Novato, CA. While the version we played was, of course, not the full version, we still got to experience many of the features slated to be included in the finished product.
Full Customization
While not often talked about, one of the more interesting features of manyBorderlandsgames isthe ability to customize your Vault Hunter to give your gameplay a more personal touch.
From color palettes to swapping head models, theBorderlandsgames have had an expanding roster of cosmetics that can be unlocked during a playthrough, which can be done in a Quick Change Station in most hub areas.
Cosmetics in previous Borderlands games also dropped from a variety of sources, most commonly via random enemy drops or mission rewards, which can make collecting cosmetics a hassle.
Along with its many quality-of-life improvements,Borderlands 4will no longer drop cosmetics from enemies,but instead will all be automatically unlocked as rewards in the game’s many missions.
Cosmetics in previous Borderlands games were also inconvenient in that heads and color palettes often took up precious inventory space. Thanks to this new change,cosmetics will instead automatically be unlocked once players earn them after completing a mission.
Quick Change stations will be a thing of the past, as cosmetics and character customization can be accessed anywhere in the world by simply opening up the customization screen on your character menu.
As the developers wanted the Vault Hunters to have more impact on the narrative, for the first time inBorderlandshistory, the player character would be an active participant in cutscenes, allowing their customized character to be featured in pivotal plot points.
For too long haveBorderlands’player characters have remained silent and faceless protagonists in their own story, and this addition will allow players to finally see more of their character’s face on screen.
Borderlands 4is set to release on September 12th, 2025.
