Black Myth Wukong Physical Sales Did So Well It Helped Stores Throughout The Holidays In 2024
The stupendous performance of Black Myth Wukong’s retail performance was shared by PM Studios CEO Mike Yum in a chat with our sister siteTheGamer. PM Studios is the physical publisher of the game that was initially released digitally on PS5 and PC.
While Yum couldn’t reveal sales figures, he did note that it’s still doing well. “I wish I could reveal the number, but those guys [Game Science] are very private and I respect that. But it’s shown me and all the distributors and partners and retailers out there that it’s very healthy still,” Yum shares.
The Black Myth Wukong physical sales helped so much that Yum said it helped some stores afloat. “I got a lot of calls like during Christmas and after the New Year’s thanking me and saying that it saved their business.”
While physical sales in the US might not be as big as it once were, it continues to be the entertainment media of choice for many countres. Yum acknowledged the importance of physical releases, stating, “It was a huge hit in certain countries like Spain and Italy and I didn’t know why. In places where they still don’t have advanced internet technology, they won’t download a 100-gigabyte disk because they’re paying per data. In places like that, where the bandwidth is low or slower, they were very much waiting for a physical copy of the game.”
Black Myth: Wukong Developer Critizes The Game Awards
The Game Science CEO is upset Black Myth: Wukong didn’t win Game of the Year.
While some might think Black Myth Wukong only appealed to China given its story and setting, that doesn’t seem too be the case. Earlier this year, game developer Game Science shared that over 30% of Black Myth Wukong sales are outside China. There are no official sales data released by Game Science, but based on research firm data, it pegs outside China sales at over seven million units back in February.
Black Myth Wukong was released on August 20 for PS5 and PC, and was Game Science’s debut AAA console game. Right from the start, it blew past games andestablished a new Steam record.
