Now thatElden Ring’sShadow of the Erdtree DLC has been slayed by most of the community, gamers are turning their attention to the nextSoulslikeendeavor of the year,Black Myth: Wukong. Often confused withWo Long: Fallen Dynasty, some playersforgot Black Myth existedconsidering how long it’s been in development. However, another gameplay detail has recently been aired to ensure the Destined One’s adventure is not forgotten again.

It’s no secret that games of this ilk are off-putting to newcomers or casual gamers because of the combat intensity. Still, Black Myth will offer aneasier difficulty levelthat should make battles more forgiving than other Soulsbourne games. It’s a great way to show more inclusivity and open up Game Science’s action RPG to a wider audience, because dying repeatedly is not for everyone’s spirit.

Hands-On Preview: Black Myth: Wukong Feels Like The Next Killer Soulslike

The game has all of the ingredients to become the next big thing.

Black Myth: Wukong’s First Phase Boss Is A Time Sensitive Affair

In the build-up to Black Myth’s release next month, fans and professionals have been able to experience hands-on previews and gawk over impressive trailers, flaunting the litany of Chinese-inspired bosses, world exploration, and the feel of combat itself, and there’s a newly surfaced battle feature that’s upping the ante.

As reported by PlayStation insider @GermanStrands on X, Black Myth bosses will only enter the second phase of an encounter if the player manages to defeat the enemy within a certain time frame. Soulslike bosses will often have two to four phases to endure on average, and adding this time trial to the mix will likely please thrill-seekers.

Upon reading the tidbit, one X user thought the feature sounded backward, saying “Feels like that should be the other way round,” suggesting a boss’ second phase should be triggered if the player doesn’t defeat the first phase in a certain amount of time.

This combat feature seemed to divide the Soulslike community, as some weren’t a fan of the idea in theory and others thought it was just plain weird. However, positive onlookers thought it was an interesting addition, which would be made sweeter if the players received extra loot for beating the second phase.

It was also highlighted how this combat mechanic could be a great way of setting up further challenges for more experienced players, where the boss will judge if the Desired One is skilled enough to take on a second phase.

Black Myth: Wukong is scheduled to be released on August 14, 2025.
