Baldur’s Gate 3’s Astarion Romance Is Difficult But Ultimately Rewarding

There’s a reason why he’s a fan favorite!

One important companion that you’re able to have in your party isAstarion. This High Elf Rogue has a tough exterior, but, he is one of the best characters in the game. His struggles give a voice to those who otherwise may not have one. Here’s a breakdown of his endings.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Ascended Astarion Ending

In the Ascended Astarion ending, you will have tohave Astarion Ascend during his personal questline. While Astarion seems to want this, the truth is, Astarion’s character is a lot more complicated than just black and white. He has the capacity to do good, he just thinks that he can’t. So, this option will allow him to lean into that evil that he sees so close to his surface. In the end, Astarion will be able to continue to walk in the sun after the final battle, and he can live his life as he pleases. The only downside to this is that you will lose the Astarion you once knew for a much colder and manipulative person.

Romance Ending

If youare romancing Astarionduring this time, he will slowly become cruel and callous toward you. He thinks that you are degrading yourself by staying with him and believes that to be the reason he can also degrade you.

Vampire Spawn Astarion Ending

In the Vampire Spawn ending, Astarion rejects the desire to Ascend like Cazador. Instead, he will kill his old master and be happy with his newfound freedom. This Astarion, while still morally gray like the rest of the cast, is a much better person than the one seen if he Ascends. After the final battle, Astarion will gain his Vampire Spawn weaknesses back and not be able to walk in the sun. However, he mentions that he won’t let that stop him from living life.

If you are romancing Astarion with this ending, you will get a cutscene after the battle with Cazador where Astarion will show you his grave, and you may discuss the implications of his decision. In the end, you both get to live happily ever after.

Killing Astarion

There are a few moments that Astarion can be killed in the game. You are able to kill him when you first meet him on the beach and the night that hetries to bite you in the camp. You can also sacrifice him in Act II to obtain apermanent bonus. Obviously, once Astarion has died, that marks the end of his story in the game.

Giving Astarion To Gandrel

The final ending for Astarion is if yougive him to Gandrel, the monster hunter near Auntie Ethel’s hut in Act I. Gandrel was sent by Cazador to find Astarion and bring him back to Baldur’s Gate. If you do pick this option, Gandrel will drag Astarion back to Baldur’s Gate for the Ascension Ritual. If you head to Cazador’s while in Baldur’s Gate, you may find Astarion with his siblings in the middle of Cazador’s Ascension Rite.
