Wizards are the prime casters ofBaldur’s Gate 3. While all casters have unique abilities to differentiate their role, none can match the diversity of spells a wizard can access. They can’t do everything, but they’ll have a spell to fit most occasions.

While their versatility is praiseworthy, their survivability is not. With no armor proficiency and limited weapons available, a wizard will have fewer options to choose. That’s okay. The items you do find can let you go all in for powerful spells to burn bright and make your enemies burn out.

10Crusher’s Ring

Many times when playing as a ranged attacker, you’ll find yourself just out of range for that perfect spell. Difficult terrain will drain your movement, or the pathing will make a bad decision, and you’re able to’t get where you want to be. Wizards can increase movement with a spell, but even then you might want a little more.

Crusher’s Ring can give that boost you need. Positioning is key to getting as many enemies as possible with anti-group spells. Three meters of movement may not seem like much, but it extends your effective range by the same distance, sometimes giving you just the space you need to devastate your enemies.

9Ring Of Protection

Wizards wearing armor is a late-game possibility you have to build or seek out. For the most part, you’ll have to make do with magic cloaks and squeeze out what few AC bonuses you can find where you can.

Lucky for wizards, there is an early game item you can get — if you’re up for a little larceny. If yousteal the druid idolof Silvanus from the Grove and bring it to Mol, she will reward you with the Ring of Protection, which increases your Armour Class and Saving Throw by plus 1. It’s a high risk high reward quest, but worth it if you pull it off.

8Markoheshkir

A legendary staff granting unique power, Markoheshkir is the best companion to any wizard. To get it, you need to navigate the vaults of Ramazith’s tower and disable the arcane shield holding it on display. As a staff, it has a plus three bonus to weapon attacks, and that is the least of its power.

The staff can act as an arcane battery, letting you cast whatever spell you please without expending a spell slot. You can get a second sixth level spell from this weapon in effect. It also raises your spell attack and save DC by one. Its unique ability, Kereska’s Favor, lets you pick a damage type to gain resistance against.

7Hood Of The Weave

Spell save DC and spell attacks are what determine if you casters spells are going to be effective or disappointing. Upgrading these two is the same as martial warriors upgrading their weapons: a necessity. The Hood of the Weave is going to provide you with the biggest boost of all your gear.

When equipped, it will grant you a plus two bonus to your spell attacks and DC. It has no other bonus than that. You can retrieve the Hood fromMystic Carrionin act three.

6Cloak Of The Weave

Part of the same set as the hood, the Cloak of the Weave grants similar bonuses. Equipping it raises your spell save DC by one and does the same for your spell attack bonus. Combined with the hood, this brings you up to a plus four bonus, surpassing the bonus from legendary magic weapons.

The cloak also functions as a damage mitigation tool by giving you a casting of Absorb Elements. Use it to halve the damage from an elemental blast. You can acquire the cloak from Helsik at the Devil’s Fee — if you can convince her to show her full stock.

5Helldusk Gloves

The House of Hope is a big power boost for your party thanks to all the items you can find inside. The hard part is defeating the master of the house and getting out alive. One item you want to grab while you’re there is the Helldusk Gloves, dropped by Haarlep is the House of Hope.

They give you one additional point to your spell attack and save DC, bringing the total bonus to five. Very little will resist your spells at this point. Your weapon and unarmed attacks will do a little extra damage, but you’re a Wizard: yourCantrips are better. Lastly, you get one free casting of Rays of Fire, an empowered Scorching Ray spell.

4Helldusk Armor

This armor seems like a mistake at first glance. Wizards don’t have proficiency in heavy armor, and yet they can wear this set. That’s because the armor’s first ability is to grant proficiency to any who wear it. Any character of any class can put this suit on and keep the full abilities of their class — except for Barbarians and Monks. You canloot the armorat the House of Hope, but you’ll need todefeat Raphaelto leave.

Not only does it raise AC to 21, you also take three less damage from all sources and get resistance to fire. If you succeed a spell save, the caster that tried to hit you bursts into flames. To top it all off, you gain a free casting of Fly once per long rest. It’s built for casters to get greater protection without compromising their ability to cast.

3Boots Of Striding

Concentration spells let you unleash powerful effects that turn a battle in your favor, but you have to keep concentrating to keep them going. Compared to regular D&D, Baldur’s Gate 3 tries to make you fail concentration in more ways than normal. No matter how good your Constitution is, or if you have the War Caster feat, if you fall prone, your spell breaks.

You can acquire the Boots of Striding in chapter 1 bydefeating the Goblin Leaders(Minthara, specifically). These boots are made to support concentration by making you immune to being shoved or knocked prone while you concentrate. You’ll still have to make checks if you get hit, but it’s better than slipping on a patch of ice. You also gain a momentum boost to movement.

2Amulet Of Greater Health

Wizards are tied with Sorcerers for having the lowest hit points of all classes. Their hit die is only a d6, compared to the more common d8, or d10 other classes get. This means each level, you’re gaining fewer hit points. A high Constitution can help mitigate this, but even then, it’s not high on a wizard’s priority list.

The Amulet of Greater Health makes you Constitution 23. That more than solves a wizard’s hit point problem. The Amulet of Greater Health can be found on the left pedestal in the House of Hope Vault in chapter 3.

1Spellcrux Amulet

The Spellcrux Amulet is an amazing find for the entire party, no matter the casting class. Its ability is simple but effective. As an action, you can use the amulet to restore a spell slot of any level. Naturally, you should choose your highest.

Unlike class abilities that restore spells, the amulet can fill a sixth level spell slot and is the only way to recover it without the effects of a long rest. This is great for using spells that last until long rests, like summon elemental, and then recharging the slot. To get it, you need to defeat the warden atMoonrise Towers prison.
