WhenPower Rangershit theaters in 2017, the hopes of fans were as high as a kite. Fans were pumped, expecting a grand revival of the colorful team of teens who fight evil with the power of the Power Zords. The film earned a respectable $142 million at the global box office. Sounds like a win, right? Well, not so fast.
Sure, it wasn’t a flop, but it didn’t knock it out of the park either. The film had its share of fun moments, but it also stumbled in some crucial areas, particularly with the way it handled its beloved characters.
Let’s dig into what worked and, more importantly, what didn’t.
Power Rangers2017: Where the characters almost got it right (but didn’t)
First things first,Power Rangersis all about the characters. You remember the original team—Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Zack, and Trini—each with their own quirks and charm. In the 2017 version, the core of the team was still there, but some of those personalities didn’t quite hit the mark.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Jason (Dacre Montgomery) was great as the reluctant leader who grew into the role, and Billy (RJ Cyler) brought a perfect mix of awkwardness and heart. They played off each other like peanut butter and jelly, giving the movie some solid emotional depth.
But then there’s Kimberly (Naomi Scott). Oh, Kimberly. Fans had a hard time connecting with her character. Why? Because instead of growing into a strong, relatable hero, she came off as a“wannabe mean girl who got held accountable”. Ouch! As one fan put it:
Scott did a fantastic job, no doubt but her character’s journey just didn’t feel all that real. It was as if she was ticking off the “redemption arc” checklist without really making us believe in her change. And that was a big letdown for many.
Then we have Trini (Becky G) and Zack (Ludi Lin). Trini, in particular, got a makeover in this reboot that left fans scratching their heads. The original Trini was a nature-loving, thoughtful character who was a bit of an outsider. But in the 2017 version, she was transformed into a “heavy rock girl who hangs out on the train tracks”. A fan felt like this was a missed opportunity to capture the spirit of the original character:

And when it came time for the Zords to fight Rita Repulsa’s monsters, fans were left wondering,“Where were the martial arts?” The Rangers opted for chains and crowbars instead of throwing punches or kicking some serious butt. That’s just not Power Rangers—it’s lazy writing. One fan noted:

Ergo, the $142 million movie (The Numbers) wasn’t a complete failure—it had some fun, campy moments and a good cast that tried their best to make the material work. But the CGI-heavy action, the offbeat character portrayals, and the lack of martial arts made the film feel more like a wannabe blockbuster than a true Power Rangers experience.
If a sequel ever comes down the pipeline, here’s what we want: better Zord designs, more martial arts action, and a fresh approach to the Rangers’ personalities. Because when it comes toPower Rangers, it’s all about the team—and getting that team’s personalities just right.
