Adding on to the few unfortunate constants in life, 2024 Oscar snubs stunned fans all around the world. As the Oscar nominations arrived on Tuesday, people realized the bizarre difference in this year’s snubs, as the Academy Awards committee seemingly pushed Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, into oblivion.

Being a Ken doll in Barbie land might be difficult, but what’s harder is living with an existential crisis like Greta Gerwig. According to reports, despite the abundance of categories and nominations at the Oscars, Gerwig was surprisingly omitted from the list. Although women getting snubbed at the Oscars is nothing new, this year it simply reeks of sexism.

Greta Gerwig Got Snubbed at the Oscars
Among all the movies that were released in 2023, hardly a few made genuine headlines and captivated fans. A few of those movies have beenOppenheimer,Barbie,Killers of the Flower Moon, andPoor Things. Now, quite obviously all of these films made their way into acclaimed categories at the Oscars. But unfortunately,Barbiedirector Greta Gerwig was omitted from the list.
While the other three movies have been directed by men,Greta Gerwigwas the only female director who got snubbed at the Oscars. Now, fans seem to hint at the Academy Awards committee’s sexism, following Gerwig’s omission. Although women getting snubbed at the Oscars is nothing new, fans believe in 2024 it’s something that shouldn’t happen.

According toMarie Clairereports for the past 25 years, only seven women have been nominated for the award for Best Director, out of 125 possible nominations. Out of those seven, only three have taken home the directing statuette to date. Making women a pathetic 5.6% of nominees, the Academy Awards seems to face a dire condition when it comes to equality.

Following these statistics, few netizens have argued that female directors failed to create an impact with their movies, which resulted in a lack of nominations and wins. But for all those arguments, there are two words – Greta Gerwig. The acclaimed filmmaker did nothing less than revolutionize the film industry withBarbie. Her movie not only grossed $1.4B at the box office but also toppledChristopher Nolan‘sOppenheimer, which earned 13 Oscar nominations.
Fans Point Out Oscars’ Sexism and Inequality
Watching this year’s Oscar snub, netizens began scratching their heads, wondering what exactly happened, and where it must have gone wrong. The Hollywood Reporterthus addressed how the directors’ branch is responsible for nominating acclaimed filmmakers under the Directing category. And although this has long been among the Academy’s oldest branches, it’s mainly composed of male members; to be specific, it currently sits with 75% men.

Therefore, this could have been a contributing factor regarding the omission of Greta Gerwig from the list of best directors, despiteLady Bird,Little Women, and evenBarbiebeing nominated for best picture. Further, noticing how Gerwig was nominated only once for the Directing categorydespite making a number of films, fans came to the conclusion about Oscars’ sexism after witnessingMargot Robbiebeing omitted alongside Gerwig.
Well there you go. A good old boys club. Time for change Academy!

Both Gerwig and Robbie ignored…it’s still so easy for Hollywood to overlook and discount artistic contributions of women – EVEN WHEN ITS THE POINT OF THE YEAR’S BIGGEST MOVIE!
My God. It was nominated for best picture. Didn’t direct itself, friends!

The joke I made to my wife walking out of BARBIE:
“Watch Gosling get nominated and Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie get shut out”
…just happened. The Academy needs a REAL man in the mirror moment because the whole idea and premise of Barbie completely flew over their heads.

Greta Gerwig snubbed for Best Director? How is that even possible? Margot Robbie not nominated, but Ryan Gosling is? Did anyone even understand the plot of the highest grossing movie of all-time?#Barbie#Oscars2024pic.twitter.com/H1wQiKy9h3

After Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie made a film about patriarchy that generated a billion dollars for Hollywood, the man in the film got nominated for a major award and I’m honestly not sure what I expectedhttps://t.co/31IbQwJ4W4

Netizens are currently shocked and pissed off at the way the Oscars took out Greta Gerwig from the Directing category. Further, Margot Robbie being omitted from nominations seemed like an insult to injury. Gerwig getting nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay with her co-writerNoah Baumbach, is generating criticism of its own.
