I was buzzing with excitement when I walked into the theater with my popcorn and soda becauseSonic the Hedgehog 3was finally here! I’ve been a fan of the Blue Blur since I was a kid, and I’ve followed his journey from a pixelated game character to big-budget Hollywood films.

I had high hopes for the third installment because its predecessors had set the bar high. However, the filmmakers managed to exceed my expectations from start to finish. It was a wild ride and I was unabashedly grinning like a child! So, let me break down the seven things that I loved the most aboutSonic the Hedgehog 3.

Jim Carrey playing double trouble

Who doesn’t adore Jim Carrey? The man has been stealing the show since the onset of the movie franchise, making us all laugh out loud at his antics. I have always been thoroughly entertained by his over-the-top portrayal of Dr. Robotnik, but this time around, he’s taken it up a notch.

Not only has he reprised his role as the brilliant robotics expert and once again nailed the mad scientist trope, but he’s also appeared as Gerald Robotnik, his 110-year-old grandfather. What’s better than one Jim Carrey? Two!

I was curious to know how they transformed him into an old and unrecognizable character and came across the official video by Paramount Pictures where you can see him spending hours for the makeup transformation. Needless to say, he made every second worth it because Gerald was shown to be a complex character, and Carrey certainly brought out the depth in him.

At the same time, he was also doing justice to Robotnik with his usual zany energy that was in full force. I am convinced that only Carrey could pull off this fun and chaotic energy. I found him to be both hilarious and genuinely threatening at times, he made me laugh, and gasp, and I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.

Shadow the Hedgehog’s big debut

Shadow the Hedgehog is an important part of the Sonic universe, and those who’ve playedSonic Adventure 2would certainly know this. So I was looking forward to seeing his big-screen debut because I always felt like he was an interesting character which they needed to explore more.

They got Keanu Reeves to voice Shadow, and I honestly can’t think of a better choice, but maybe I am a bit biased because I absolutely love theMatrixactor. With that being said, Reeves brought such brooding intensity to the role and it perfectly matched Shadow’s dark and mysterious persona. The highlight for me was his introduction scene and every other action sequence that Shadow was involved in as the combat style was so sleek and brutal.

The trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles

Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, and Idris Elba as Knuckles had such great chemistry! Sonic stepped up as a leader but was still cocky and fun-loving, meanwhile, Tails was a wonderful sidekick with intellect and cool gadgets. I personally enjoyed Knuckles the most because his dry humor made me laugh several times in the movie.

But what I absolutely adored was how well they were working together, with natural banter, seamless teamwork, and personalities that complemented each other. It was such a wholesome feeling to watch them take on challenges because I was reminded of why I fell in love with these characters in the first place.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3is nostalgia done right!

Longtime Sonic fans will absolutely love how the film is full of easter eggs and callbacks from the franchise. From Shadow’s memorable lines to subtle nods at classic levels, the movie made me go“I remember that”at multiple instances throughout its runtime.

The scene of Shadow’s awakening felt like it was ripped straight fromSonic Adventure 2and brought to life by brilliant CGI artists. They also added plenty of little touches like sound effects and references to old games and I couldn’t help but feel like a kid again. Needless to say, theSonic Hedgehog3’s nostalgic value is off the charts and never feels forced.

Visuals of that would take your breath away

Sonic the Hedgehog 3is easily the most visually stunning movie out of all three. They’ve taken CGI to the next level in this one and it shows because every scene felt like a feast for the eyes. They built lush landscapes and also added intricate details to the characters, but what blew me away the most were the action sequences.

I have mentioned it already but the ones that included Shadow’s Chaos Control moves were animated so well! They looked fluid and dynamic and my eyes were glued to the screen! The final battle sequence was another standout and they executed it flawlessly.

But perhaps the most commendable aspect of the movie was how it blended realism with the aesthetics of the Sonic game. It’s a technical detail that made the whole world look like it was grounded yet fantastical.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3post-credit tease

I’ve learned my lesson a few times now, so I don’t exit the theaters until I’m absolutely sure that there’s no post-credit scene. I’m so glad that I stayed this time around as well because the one inSonic Hedgehog 3blew me away. I obviously won’t spoil it for you but let’s just say that the filmmakers have set up some exciting possibilities for the future.

So, the scene hints at the introduction of another beloved character, and honestly, I was so thrilled to watch it unfold. It’s clear that the Sonic cinematic universe is just getting started, and I am more than excited to see where it goes next.

When the movie ended, I was already looking forward to the next one because I wanted to experience the humor, heart, and action again. It had such great additions but still didn’t lose the essence of what makes Sonic special, i.e., the joy of going on an adventure, the power of friendship, and the thrill of moving fast!

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be in theatres on 20th December 2024.
