The much-awaited finale of theJujutsu Kaisenmanga series created raging debates among its fans as it could not reach up to its sky-high expectations. Nevertheless, if one is comparing it to overall anime endings, this finale ofJujutsu Kaisenwould not be the worst ending, to be honest.

Anime often has the reputation of not bringing cool ideas to a satisfying ending. Many classic series have disappointed viewers in their final acts, leaving everyone frustrated and confused. From uneventful storylines to abrupt and unresolved conclusions, the list of disappointing anime endings is truly staggering.
Here are five anime series whose endings were perhaps even less satisfying than theJujutsu Kaisenconclusion. The case studies of these anime can serve as an eye-opener to the intricacies faced by anime creators in trying to tie a complex narrative with great fan expectations at the end.

Erased (Boku Dake ga Inai Machi)is a masterclass thriller series interweaving time travel, serial murder, and supernatural stuff. Right from the get-go, the story becomes so intense that it forces the viewers to sit on the edge of their seats throughout. The best part of the show comes when the protagonist, Satoru, is crazily trying to find who the merciless killer is, and every twist after that keeps getting more thrilling than the last.
However, quite unexpectedly, even after finding out the identity of the killer, the real reason behind his wrongdoings remains unanswered. The lack of characterization behind the actions of the killer strips away any real impact from Satoru’s ultimate victory.

Since the series failed miserably to give the audiences meaningful answers, its captivating narrative leaves an unfortunate sense of disappointment and frustration. The lack of a fleshed-out narrative preventsErasedfrom attaining its full potential, leaving behind a lasting feeling of unfulfilled promise.

Erasedis available to watch onNetflix.
Tokyo Ghoul
The anime adaptation ofTokyo Ghoulturned out to be a stinging reminder of why one should not deviate from the manga! With such a great story narration that was seen in the manga, the creative liberties taken in anime led to a disastrous end and have given the whole franchise a notorious name. However, such backlash has backhandedly benefited the manga, bringing a bad name not to the original writing but to the poorly developed anime adaptation.
Missteps began withTokyo Ghoul Root Awhich did not properly explain Ken Kaneki’s journey to becoming a creature of darkness. The follow-up in the attempt to make up for these mistakes was inTokyo Ghoul: re. Yet it was too late and couldn’t undo the damage done by its previous season, leaving its viewers disappointed at heart.

The Promised Neverland
The sudden quality drop between the two seasons ofThe Promised Neverlandwas such a jarring experience to behold. It did so great in the first season, leading toward tension and suspense, as it followed a set of orphans who discovered a dark truth that they are, in fact, commodities in a demon-dominated world. Meanwhile, The second season utilized hasty pacing and narrative shortcuts that undermined the total potential of the series.
The second season dealt with many important storylines from the manga and either compressed or omitted them altogether. It made the later events appear unearned or unjustifiable. This sluggish adaptation thus stripped away the carefully constructed momentum built up over some very intriguing plot points, only to leave viewers both frustrated and disappointed by this truly once-promisinganime.
Rated:8.2 (IMDb)

Attack on Titan
Attack on Titanis a beast in modern anime, which deals with one of the most complicated narratives in the whole entertainment media. It is a series with some insane storytelling and world-building which has truly won the hearts of the global audience. The first few seasons of the show established it as among fan favorites, especially the Declaration of War episode from Season Four.
However, the climax did diminish the ultimate legacy of the series because Eren’s mysterious motives were concluded in a rather unsatisfying manner without much depth. His whole journey was undermined by just a shallow emotional statement – it was all because he loved Mikasa!
Attack on Titan is Overdoing it to Keep Hajime Isayama’s Anime Alive by Baiting Fans with Crumbs and Making it the “Series that never ends”
Other questionable decisions taken towards the end, like the “Only Ymir Knows” line and the twist on Eren’s mother’s death, were also baffling to the audience. The ending ofAttack on Titanis thus widely considered to be one of the worst anime blunders of recent times, demolishing the phenomenal potential of the show and leaving a very bad taste in all the devoted viewers’ mouths.
Rated:9.1 (IMDb)
Attack on Titanis available to watch onCrunchyroll&Prime Video.
The Future Diary
The Future Diaryis a suspense series in which twelve powerful diaries that can predict the future are used as weapons in a deadly game to take over the God of Time and Space. This series initially weaved together complicated plot threads to a very satisfying conclusion, tying in many loose ends. But when you think that it just couldn’t get any worse, the series suddenly and very unfortunately took a jarring turn.
An abrupt epilogue takes the viewer 10,000 years into the future and introduces a new Diary Game, cutting off without an ending. Viewers were forcefully denied their closure with this cliffhanger, leaving questions that remained unanswered for years, until the release ofThe Future Diary: Redial. The wait only made the disappointment greater, as the original anime ending was marked as a poorly explained and unfinished mess.
Rated:7.5 (IMDb)
The Future Diaryis available to watch onCrunchyroll.
