Pokemon: 10 Best Non-Legendary Poison Types In The Series, Ranked

If you need a strong Poison-type Pokemon for your team, these are all great choices!

The difference between the Defense and Special Defense stat is the amount of damage reduction a Pokemon will receive when being hit with different kinds of attacks. Special Defense defends against special attacks, where the Defense stat protects the Pokemon from physical attacks. Finding a Pokemon with a great Defense stat is a good idea if you want to last in battle, and there are no better options than the ones listed below!

Venusaur, Gengar and Roserade as the top contenders of Poison Type Pokemon

This article will not include Mega Pokemon, Ultra Beasts, Legendary Pokemon, or Mythical Pokemon. If these were factored in, they would fill nearly every entry on the list.

Not only does Carbink have an impressive150 Defense stat, but a 150 Special Defense stat to match! This means it is well-defended from anything its opponent throws its way in battle. The rest of its stats aren’t overly impressive, but there’s nothing wrong with a Pokemon that specializes!

Carbink in Pokemon.

It is a Rock and Fairy-type Pokemon, so players need to be careful and avoid Water, Grass, and Ground-type moves and especially steer clear of Steel-type moves since it has a 4x weakness to this type of attack. Carbink is a defensive powerhouse, but when hit with one of its weaknesses, it can still be defeated quickly.

Doublade is only the middle evolution in its evolution line, which may make its inclusion in this list puzzling. It’s one of the few Pokemon that has a stronger stat than its evolution, thoughAegislash has some impressive statsin its own right. This Pokemon is great in battle and has one of the best type combos in the game!

Its Steel and Ghost-typing give it an enormous list of resistances (Normal, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Steel, and Fairy-type moves), which pairs perfectly with its 150 Defense stat. If you want a Pokemon that can last in battle, this is the one for you!

This Pokemon may look intimidating, but its strong suit isn’t attacking, it’s defending. Toxapex is a Defense and Special Defense powerhouse. Its152 Defense Statand 142 Special Defense stat make it a difficult Pokemon to topple, but this becomes even more evident when you take a look at its typing.

Toxapex’s Water and Poison dual-typing gives it a long list of resistances (Fire, Water, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Bug, Steel, and Fairy-type moves), stemming from some of the most common Pokemon typings in the game.

Onix was introduced way back in Generation I’s Pokemon Red and Green and has remained a Defense stat powerhouse ever since. With a whopping160 Defense stat, it can take most of the hits an opponent throws its way. This is a vital asset for Onix because its dual typing of Rock and Ground gives it a 4xtype weakness to Water and Grass-type moves.

Its Defense stat can make up for this a bit, but it is still a mass vulnerability in battle. Its typing isn’t all bad, however, and the Pokemon also has a resistance to Normal, Fire, Poison, Flying, and Rock-type moves and an all-out immunity to Electric-type attacks!

6Bastiodon

Shield Pokemon

Bastiodon’s moniker is “the Shield Pokemon,” so it only makes sense that it appears on this list. Bastiodon has not only a greatDefense stat (168)but also a powerful Special Defense stat of 138. This, paired with its long list of resistances (Normal, Ice, Poison, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, and Fairy-type moves) which come from its complementary typing of Rock and Steel, make Bastiodon a nightmare for would-be opponents on the battlefield.

Players should Water, Fighting, and Gorund-type enemies, as they can still do hefty damage to this monster. Bastiodon is a Fossil Pokemon that existed in a time long before the modern-day games. Pokemon must have been much sturdier in its era!

Iron Armor Pokemon

Aggron is a beast of a Pokemon. This monster has a180 Defense statand its Steel and Rock dual-typing make battling it a scary prospect. These typings paired together give Aggron a resistance to Normal, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Poison, and Fairy-type moves… Good luck damaging it!

As long as Aggron users can avoid its severe weaknesses to Fighting and Ground-type attacks they should be able to steamroll most opponents in battle. Its Physical attack stat of 110 shouldn’t be overlooked either and with moves like Iron Tail, Iron Head, and Stone Edge, this Pokemon can really deal some damage.

Bivalve Pokemon

Like Onix, Cloyster was introduced all the way back in Generation I and has remained on the list of Pokemon with the highest Defense stats ever since. Cloyster is an impressive Pokemon all around. Not only does it have decent stats across the board, but it also has two great abilities, Shell Armor and Skill Link!

Shell Armor prevents the Pokemon from taking any critical hits, which saves you from defeat far more often than you would realize! Skill Link causes any multi-strike move to always hit the maximum number of times. This means Icicle Spear, the move Cloyster learns on evolution, will always deal 125 damage! That’s an instant defeat for any Dragon-type Pokemon that faces off against Cloyster.

Iceberg Pokemon

Avalugg, and its Hisuian regional variant, have an impressive184 Defense stat. The Hisuian variant has a higher Attack stat, but is otherwise a worse option out of the two. WhereAvalugg is a sole Ice-type Pokemonwith few weaknesses, Hisuian Avalugg holds a dual Ice and Rock-typing, which gives it a massive 4x weakness to Fighting-type moves.

Avalugg isn’t all defense, however, and comes with a nice 117 Attack stat. This, paired with its access to great physical attacks like Icicle Crash and Ice Spinner, makes it a threat in any battle.

Iron Snake Pokemon

Steelix is the evolution of Onix, so it’s only natural that it would make this list as well. Onix gets a massive boost to its already staggering Defense stat when it evolves into a Steelix, bumping it up to200. Steelix is an all-around better version of its pre-evolution. Not only does its Defense stat see a hefty bump, but it loses that pesky Rock-typing, removing most of the major obstacles in Onix’s way to becoming a fantastic Pokemon.

Steelix is a Steel and Ground-type Pokemonwith resistance or complete immunity to ten out of the 18 types in the game! This makes him a real force to be reckoned with if opponents aren’t able to capitalize on its weaknesses (Fire, Water, Fighting, and Ground-type moves).

Mold Pokemon

Who would have guessed that Shuckle would be sitting at number one on any Pokemon list, but here we are! While this Bug and Rock-type Pokemon may not be the most useful in battle, its enormousDefense Stat of 230is nothing to scoff at! Its Defense stat is higher than nearly every legendary and Mega Pokemon.

It also has the incredibly useful Sturdy ability, which allows Shuckle to survive an otherwise fatal blow if it is dealt while the Pokemon is at full health. This can be a lifesaver in battle and allow players to get at least one hit in on their opponent before the Mold Pokemon faints.
