Angelina Jolie returned to acting after her MCU stint inEternals, in Pablo Larraín’sMaria. Her performance as the opera singer Maria Callas has received rave reviews and it even garnered her a Golden Globe nomination. Jolie joined other actresses at The Hollywood Reporter’s Round Table this year.

Jolie revealed that she does not tend to watch her performances after filming them as she does not want to get conscious about her looks and the way she sounds. This habit seems to be common among other actors too, including Jolie’sThe Touristco-star Johnny Depp.
Angelina Jolie revealed she does not like to watch herself on screen after filming
An actor is the face of the movie. No matter who is behind the camera or is the music composer, set designer, and editor, it is through the actor that the audience realizes the emotional core of the film. It is an extremely vulnerable position to put oneself into and everything from the way they look to the way they sound is on display.

Hence, many actors seem to not let all these superficial elements distract them from getting to portray the right emotion. Plus, it is always weird to see oneself on screen, no matter how experienced one is. TakeAngelina Jolie, who has been in front of the camera since her late teens and is the daughter of star Jon Voight.
In a recent Actor’s Roundtable hosted byThe Hollywood Reporter,Jolie admitted to not watching herself on screen after filming in order to not get hung up on the looks. She said,

I really have trouble watching myself too. There are many films I’ve never seen. I can never watch dailies. I don’t enjoy watching myself…No [I’m not tempted]…I love the work. I love the process. I don’t wanna think about what I look or sound like or else I don’t know if I’ll be as free.
Other actresses at the roundtable includedthis year’s Oscar favoritesDemi Moore, Tilda Swinton, Zendaya, Zoe Saldaña, and Mikey Madison. All of them seemed to agree with her decision, though Swinton asked her if she was ever tempted to watch herself.

Angelina Jolie’sThe Touristco-star Johnny Depp also has a similar problem
Angelina Jolie’s statement about not watching her own performances is not unique to her. Many actors have admitted to not doing the same as it hinders their ability to be free and give a better performance. Actors like Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, and even last year’s Best Actor Oscar winner Cillian Murphy have admitted to being their own worst critics.

Jolie’sThe Touristco-starJohnny Deppalso admitted to not watching his films after their shot. He told David Letterman onThe Late Show With David Letterman(viaFar Out Magazine),
In a way, you know, once my job is done on the film. It’s really none of my business [laughs]…Yeah, I stay as far away. If I can, I’d attempt to stay in as profound a state of ignorance as possible.

The actor also famously said that he did not watchThe Tourist, the box office and critical disappointment which he starred along with Angelina Jolie.
